A micro bikini is a two-piece swimsuit cut with far less fabric than a standard bikini. The top consists of a small triangle or bandeau. The bottoms cover only the front, with string or thong-style sides and back. The word “microkini” is synonymous with micro bikini. Within that category there are three coverage levels that shoppers often get confused with: micro, extreme micro and sheer. This guide separates them so you know what arrives in the box.
What is a micro bikini?
A micro bikini reduces coverage in both pieces. The top is usually a small triangle, a narrow bandeau or a scrunch-style cup held by ties. The bottom keeps a front panel just wide enough to cover, then narrows to strings or a thong back. For comparison, a Brazilian bikini, shows a cheeky but real back panel, a micro bottom leaves the back almost entirely open.
Most micro bikinis are tie-adjustable. That matters more than in regular swimwear because there is no structure to hold things in place. You set the fit yourself, at the neck, back and hips, every time you put it on.
Femme X micro bikinis in our Micro Bikinis collection come in one size. Micro Bikinis use tie-side bottoms and are made from a stretch polyester and spandex blend (94% polyester, 6% spandex on the current styles). They are designed for the beach, the pool deck and tanning, we’d recommend choosing another option for your lap swims.
Micro vs extreme micro vs sheer
These labels describe coverage and fabric, not quality. Here is what each one means in practice.
Micro bikini
Minimal but complete coverage. The front panel of the bottom covers fully, the top covers the nipple area with a small triangle, and the back is a thong or string. This is the entry point for most first-time buyers and the cut that suits tanning with minimal lines.
Extreme micro bikini
The extreme micro bikini is the same construction with even less fabric. The top triangles shrink to a few centimeters across. The front panel of the bottom narrows to a strip, and the sides are pure string. Extreme bikinis are great for photo-shoots, bikini contests and a popular choice for private-pool wear. They show the most skin a swimsuit can while still counting as a swimsuit, and they need careful tying to stay in place when you move.
Sheer micro bikini
Coverage from the pattern, not from opacity. A sheer micro bikini uses mesh or a sheer overlay in place of a lined panel, so the shape is there but the fabric is see-through when dry and even more so when wet. The Femme X Sheer Bandeau Bikini uses a bandeau top with a sheer mesh overlay and tie-side bottoms; the Femme X Micro Sheer Bikini pairs a triangle top with mesh accents. Sheer pieces are the least practical for public beaches and the most requested for photoshoots and pool parties when the setting allows for it.
Mirror and holographic micro bikinis
A fourth group is about finish rather than coverage. Mirror-finish fabric reflects light and reads metallic on camera. The Femme X Mirror Micro Bikini has a bandeau-inspired top and an ultra-minimal bottom in mirror colors including black, red, beige, pink and purple. Mirror bikinis overlap heavily with festival wear. If festivals are the plan, you can locate the same pieces in our Rave Outfits edit.
How much does a micro bikini actually cover?
There is no industry standard, so brands measure differently. A practical way to compare is by the width of the front panel at its widest point and by whether the back is a thong (a strip of fabric) or a G-string (only a cord). Femme X product pages describe each bottom as tie-side, thong or minimal cut, and the photos are shot on a body, not a mannequin, so you can read coverage from the image.
Two facts help set expectations. First, tie-side bottoms let you pull the sides higher or lower on the hip, which changes how much of the front panel shows. Second, stretch fabric spreads when tied tight; a bottom that looks narrow on the hanger widens slightly once worn.
Who wears micro bikinis, and where
Most of our buyers fall into four groups: women who want the fewest tan lines possible, dancers and performers who need swimwear that reads on stage, festival and pool-party goers who want mirror and neon finishes, and couples buying for a private beach or a resort trip. The cut is not tied to a body type. Small busts often prefer a triangle top because there is nothing to fill; fuller busts usually prefer a bandeau or a scrunch top with wider ties for support.
Public beach rules vary. Many US beaches allow thong bottoms. However, most do not allow sheer tops. Check before you travel, so that you can be prepared with a cover up if needed.
How to choose a micro bikini set
Start your shopping by looking for the top. Pro tips: Triangle tops adjust more; bandeau tops hold a cleaner line and hide better under mesh overlays. Once the top is found, choose the bottom. Pro tips: choose a thong for a bit of coverage or a G-string for the least coverage. Lastly, pick a finish: solid, sheer or mirror.
On sizing, Femme X swim is one size with adjustable ties. This fits a wide middle range. It is important to note that it is not made for every body type. FemmeBasics lingerie sizes follow our size guide. Femme X swim does not use those measurements; please refer to the product notes on any adjustments that will be needed.
If you would like a one-piece with the same minimal attitude, look at monokinis. Cut-out one-pieces show as much skin as a micro bikini in front while keeping the top and bottom connected, which many women find easier to wear.
Care
Rinse in cold water after salt or chlorine. Wash by hand with mild soap and lay flat to dry. Mirror fabric should never go through a dryer and should never be ironed. The finish is applied to the surface, and as a result any heat will damage it. For storage, ensure that mirror pieces lay flat rather than folded, to avoid creasing the coating.
Quick answers
What is the difference between a micro bikini and a regular bikini?
A micro bikini uses much less fabric: a small triangle or bandeau top and a bottom with a narrow front panel and string or thong back. A regular bikini has full cups and a back panel.
Is an extreme micro bikini the same as a microkini?
Microkini is a general term for any micro bikini. Extreme micro bikini refers specifically to the smallest cuts, with strip-width front panels and string sides.
Can you swim in a sheer micro bikini?
Anyone can wear a sheer micro bikini. It is important to note that sheer mesh becomes more transparent when wet and offers no support. It is best for tanning, pool parties and photoshoots rather than active swimming.
